Introducing Summer of Sculpture | Collaborative Residency with Painter Georgi Morrison and Sculptors Johannes Nielsen, Claire Jackson & Natanya Barrett

Artist in Residence: 27th May - 25th August 2025

Bankside Hotel, Art Yard Studio, London SE1 9JU

Bankside Hotel x Contemporary Collective are delighted to present Summer of Sculpture: a collaborative artist residency exploring the dynamic relationship between painting and sculpture. For this summer season, we welcome painter Georgi Morrison as our Artist in Residence, alongside a rotating showcase of sculptural works by Claire Jackson, Johannes Nielsen, and Natanya Barrett.

Over three months, Georgi will develop a new body of work responding directly to each sculptor’s practice. With a new sculptural installation introduced to the studio every month, Georgi will engage in a live, evolving conversation between mediums, translating form into flow, structure into atmosphere. Her paintings will reflect her signature dreamlike style and explore her residency theme, Form and Flow: an investigation into the tension between precision and movement, inspired by the dialogue between nature, architecture, and the human figure.

Outside the studio, a curated Sculpture Garden by Gareth Griffiths will transform Bankside Hotel’s mezzanine terrace into a vibrant open-air exhibition, with two additional works installed in the courtyard. Known for his bold, architectural approach to form, Gareth will present a series of seven sculptures that bring sculptural experimentation into public view and expand the residency’s reach beyond the studio walls. His playful, geometric style creates a striking contrast with the surrounding natural and urban landscape, inviting moments of reflection, interaction, and discovery in unexpected places.

Summer of Sculpture will also include hands-on workshops, open studio days, and opportunities for the public to connect directly with the artists. These events invite hotel guests and local community members to explore the residency’s themes, observe the creative process, and participate in meaningful artistic exchange.

Maintaining an open studio throughout the residency, Georgi welcomes visitors to witness her process and engage in ongoing conversations around her evolving body of work. Her journey will also be documented via Contemporary Collective’s Instagram (@Contemporary_Collective), offering a behind-the-scenes look at both her creative practice and the wider collaborative process.

About the Artists:

Georgi Morrison’s work explores the harmony found in contrasts: vibrant colours paired with muted tones, interior scenes melting into exterior landscapes, and solitary figures caught in quiet moments of reflection or transition. Her paintings often lean into subtly surreal themes and symbolism, offering a window into her inner world and perceptions of reality. The result is a body of work that feels at once familiar and dreamlike.

Johannes Nielsen is a sculptor and visual artist based in Beijing. A graduate of Lunds Art School, he has lived and worked across Europe and Asia, including a formative period as an artistic assistant in Dublin. Since childhood, Johannes has been fascinated by the fluid boundary between physical reality and inner perception, a theme that continues to shape his emotionally resonant and perceptually engaging work.

Claire Jackson’s sculptural practice explores the intersection of science and nature, using unfamiliar materials to evoke curiosity and wonder. Her white biomorphic forms, made from the smart material Polycaprolactone, reflect the beauty and simplicity of natural structures while celebrating scientific innovation and the surreal.

Natanya Barrett transforms the body into a hybrid through virtual realms, drawing from the female form and Rorschach imagery. Her work challenges gender, racial, and cultural stereotypes, particularly within Afroculturalism, to reframe and empower the black body. Through sculptural pieces, she creates a new, divine narrative that offers positive, mythological stories of empowerment.

Gareth Griffiths creates vibrant abstract steel sculptures inspired by Googie architecture, a bold, post-war American style known for its futuristic forms. His work transforms industrial materials into dynamic, architectural art that blurs the line between structure and sculpture, inviting playful engagement with space and design.
